Welcome to the Radboud Data Repository (RDR). On this page, we provide a quick, step-by-step guide for researchers using the RDR for the first time.
The Digital Competence Centre also provides a lecture on how to start working with the RDR for Radboud University and Radboudumc employees. For more information go to the Digital Competence Centre gROW channel and search for the course titled 'Radboud Data Repository - Getting started'.
Only researchers affiliated with the institutes listed under Step 3 are eligible to become a collection manager and thus to request a collection.
Step 1: Create your RDR profile
Log in to the Radboud Data Repository to create your user profile.
To log in click the login button at the top right of your screen, then use your Surfconext account to continue. At this point, you must agree to the RDR Repository Policy and the privacy policy. For more extensive help, see here.
You now arrive on a mostly empty page. This is normal: you do not have any collections yet. You have just created your RDR profile and are free to log out at this stage.
Step 2: Choose your collection type
There are three collection types in the RDR that each serve a different purpose. The collection types were designed to support a researcher throughout an entire research project, by having one collection type for each phase of the research project. Depending on your research needs, you can choose to request one of each of the collection types or only the type(s) that you need. In the image, the timing within the research project, the goal, and (in general terms) intended content of the three collection types are outlined to help you choose the one(s) you need.
Step 3: Request a collection
Now you are ready to request one or more collections. How you can do this depends on your institute and is described below. If your research administrator cannot be reached, please contact the Digital Competence Centre at [email protected].

Step 4: Edit your collection details and add colleagues
You will receive a confirmation email once your collection has been created. When you log in to the RDR again (see Step 1), your collection should be visible under My collections. We recommend that you add additional information (metadata) to your collection before working with it:
- Click on the title of your new collection.
- Click on Edit metadata on the top left of your screen.
- Add any applicable metadata, such as keywords, associated data and an abstract.
- Optionally, add colleagues to your collection. You can only add colleagues to your collection if they have an RDR profile (see Step 1). Your colleagues can have different roles (manager, contributor, or viewer) and different rights.
- Click on save changes to save the changes.
For more extensive help, see here.
Step 5: Add research data to your collection
In order to transfer your data to an RDR collection, you can upload the data via the web portal or use a WebDAV client. Uploading data via the web portal is easiest and we recommend this option if you are not familiar with WebDAV.
You are now ready to start working with your first RDR-collection!
